Everyone is the architect of their own happiness - Joseph Pilates
Kia ora, I’m Mary — owner and instructor at Pilates Lab, based in beautiful Pegasus, North Canterbury.
At Pilates Lab, my goal is to create a warm, inclusive space where we celebrate what your body is capable of. Movement here is joyful, empowering, and deeply rewarding.
Experience a fun and transformative approach to Pilates that will have you feeling not just stronger, longer, leaner and more flexible but also relieved of physical tension and mental stress.
Come move with me, and experience what’s possible.
My journey into Pilates began with a twisted ankle, and a wake-up call.
After pushing through a tough workout, I found myself sidelined by a clumsy injury, the result of muscle fatigue, poor balance (think baby giraffe), and a realisation that strength alone wasn’t enough. I needed more than just power. I needed control, coordination, and a better relationship with my body.
That moment sparked a turning point. As I allowed my body to heal, I began exploring more mindful movement. Through research and curiosity, I discovered Pilates and immediately resonated with its intelligent approach to movement and wellbeing.
I trained in London with Future Fit Academy and went on to specialise in Pre & Postnatal Pilates, Common Orthopaedic Conditions, and the use of apparatus and props. Since moving to Aotearoa, my learning has only deepened. I've completed comprehensive training with APPI's Pilates for Kids & Teens and extensive Fitness Education training specificaly for Older Adults (Level 1 & 2). I am also a Yoga Nidra & Breathwork facilitator and I'm currently expanding my 200hr Meditation Teacher Training, further aligning my practice with a whole person approach to wellbeing — body, mind, and spirit.
Opening my own studio had always been a dream, and moving to New Zealand gave me the opportunity to bring that dream to life. That’s how Pilates Lab was born. A place where movement is meaningful, inclusive, and grounded in the Te Whare Tapa Whā model of wellbeing.
I am CIMSPA-registered in the UK, REPs-registered in New Zealand, and a proud member of Pilates Aotearoa. You can feel confident knowing you're receiving world-class instruction backed by experience, empathy, and continuous learning.
"A good instructor should know how to work with a wide range of bodies, big and small, short and tall, injured and pain-free. We’re not training to be Olympic gymnasts. We’re just hoping to grow stronger and more at home in our bodies. And that’s something everybody deserves to feel."
Pilates Lab studio is warm, calm, and intentionally intimate. With space for just six participants per class, we create a setting where everyone feels welcome and supported. Small class sizes allow for genuine connection — both with your body and with others — and give me the chance to offer personalised guidance, helping you move safely and with confidence.
Inspired by the Te Whare Tapa Whā model of wellbeing, our studio nurtures all aspects of hauora: physical, mental, spiritual, and social. We believe movement is more than just exercise — it’s a path to wellbeing.
We use a range of small equipment to enrich your practice, including blocks, bands, balls, straps, hedgehogs, and of course, the infamous magic circle! Thick Pilates mats are provided, and you're welcome to bring your own yoga mat to layer on top. Classes can be done barefoot or with grip socks — whatever supports your comfort and stability.
Our space also includes bathroom facilities, a first-aid kit, and water to keep you hydrated.
At Pilates Lab, you're not just moving — you're restoring your whare. Every class is an invitation to reconnect with your whole self.
Meet Mittens, our resident Pilates cat.
Mittens loves to say hello and check on your progress, she is often found relaxing in the sun-soaked studio. Of course when it’s time for class she is happy to wait outside unless otherwise invited!
